Westland City Hall

Westland, Michigan

The City of Westland purchased an existing 63,000sf Circuit City building to renovate for their new City Hall.  Scope of improvements to the empty building included interior build-out, new HVAC system, new electrical system, new entrance upgrades, new public plaza area, site and parking improvements, energy conservation elements, and technology installation. The interior build-out of space utilized extensive daylight within the facility, and included city-office spaces, council chambers, meeting rooms, public spaces, rest rooms, and lunchrooms. The project value was $7.4 million. The Westland City Hall project was the winner of the 2015 Community Excellence Award for Strength in Structure by the Michigan Municipal League and the 2016 American Public Works Association (APWA) Project of the Year – Structures Award ($5-$25 million category).

Plymouth District Library

Plymouth, Michigan

The Plymouth District Library has undergone expansion, remodeling and facility improvements with the McCarthy & Smith team since 2006. The initial project included a new 8,800sf space on the second floor that was developed with three new dormers, a new monument staircase, two elevators, and one extended stairway. The expanded space contains a computer lab, six modular guest rooms, two study rooms, reference center, wireless internet access, and restrooms. A new teen area was configured on the main floor, and a complete remodel of the lower level was performed in the children’s area. All renovations and expansion occurred while the library remained open.  Most recently,  facility improvements included HVAC upgrades, new generator, new roof system,  new entrance door, interior upgrades, and a new snow melt system.

Redford Township District Library

Redford, Michigan

The new Redford Township District Library is an expansive two-story structure, spanning 64,000 sf. Highlights of the new facility include a coffee shop, various reading areas, small study rooms, large conference room, fireplace, and spaces for community activities. The interior incorporates detailed design and finishes with exceptional lighting features, along with wood details within wall paneling, a circulation desk, and reference desks. A major project issue was the determination of weak soils at the site. In order to construct a two-story structure on this site, extensive site preparation and unique foundation structures were used. The project was completed on time and within budget and had a project value of $7.5 million.
